Lithonia man takes students underwater to document artifacts.

 

Chris Searles is a DWP instructor, member of the Atlanta Underwater Explores, Chris is a chaperon/mentor for YDWP and has been involved with YDWP since it’s inception.

 

July 18-23, 2016 young divers of Youth Diving With a Purpose (YDWP) will be joining the National Park Service (NPS), in Biscayne National Park, Florida, on a mission to search for and identify the slave shipwreck Guerrero. The Guerrero wrecked in the Key Largo area of the Florida reefs in 1827 with 561 enslaved Africans on board. Though remnants have been identified on earlier dives that help to place this wreck in a specific era and country of origin, no “smoking gun” positive identifier has been found to date.

Diving With A Purpose (DWP), a program that creates trained volunteer marine advocates to assist in the stewardship of heritage assets in National Parks and National Marine Sanctuaries, and introduces young people to maritime-linked careers, was honored by the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP) today with the Chairman’s Award for Achievement in Historic Preservation.

 

Dr. Richards is the Carter Center’s field general against river blindness, a horrible tropical illness carried by black flies.

 

Voyage to Discovery represents an unprecedented opportunity to educate the public about African-American participation in U.S. Maritime affairs, since the period of pre-Cival War slavery to today.

 

On May 23, 2014 representatives of the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department joined with the Cape Town Fire Rescue Department (CTFR) in South Africa in a special expression of mutual aid. They combined their resources to aid eight hundred children who attend the impoverished Bramble Way Primary School in Cape Town’s Bonteheuwel Township.
